Editing

What kind of editing do I need?

I offer a range of editorial services, tailored to each author’s needs. Read on to get a sense of a few different options, and feel free to reach out if you don’t see what you’re looking for.

copyediting - basic

Also known as “line editing,” this is just the basics - I carefully check your writing for errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and for general clarity and style. This is good for writers looking to polish their formal written English, or can help you get from draft to final product, honing your words so they best express your ideas and reach the audience you want.

copyediting - Detailed

Detailed, line-by-line edits focused on style, clarity, consistency, and adherence to a specified style guide. Detailed copyediting also includes cross-checking citations, reference formatting, and other formalities, and includes a style sheet. This includes everything in basic copyediting but also helps you get your manuscript ready for submission and publication.

developmental editing

This works on the overall structure and direction of a writing project. It can be useful for those starting a new project, or who need help shifting gears in their ongoing work. Choose this if you are looking for help building an argument, organizing evidence, making sure your text is cohesive, or other big picture issues. Developmental editing includes detailed in-text edits as well as a report summarizing revision suggestions.

manuscript review

Instead of detailed feedback on your words, a manuscript review focuses on the ideas behind your text. Rather than edit your document directly, I write a summary report outlining the big picture suggestions for revising the argument, structure, and other major issues. This is similar to developmental editing but without the in-text edits—a good option for writers who just need a new perspective, or who are working on limited budgets.
