Why work with Micha?

Words can change the world

I have always loved writing. I often start writing projects with a clear direction in mind, but then end up somewhere completely different. I don’t mind that the process is sometimes a struggle, or means letting go of ideas that I love - the journey is a part of the pleasure for me. Writing changes what I think, and gives me new ways to understand the world.

When I started teaching writing to graduate students, I realized that this same process of discovery and change was keeping many people from believing that they were “real” writers. Lots of people have been led to believe that good writing flows from some kind of transcendental genius — that if you don’t have the perfect idea to start with, or the perfect words to express your idea on the first try, then you are not a good writer.

This kind of “imposter syndrome” is widespread, and even more common among women, people of color, queer and trans folks, and members of other marginalized communities. This means that we don’t often hear a full range of voices and ideas, since only those with plenty of privilege, confidence, or support make it through tough writing projects.

I work to support writers who struggle to get heard. Whether it’s proofreading for a writer still perfecting their English, a little help with time management for an overworked academic, or in-depth coaching on overcoming self-doubt, I work hard to amplify and strengthen diverse voices.

If you are looking for a little extra support for your writing and are not sure where to start, check out my editing and writing coaching services, or drop me a line!
